This application is for any current freshman, sophomore, or junior at Gilman who is interested in an editorial staff  position.  You may apply for as many or as few positions as you want.  To read more about The News and what we do, see here.

Your application and supplement (if applicable) is due March 14th at noon.

To apply for a position on The News' masthead, please complete the following application.  

  • All applicants must complete the "general information" and "general questions" section
  • All applicants are encouraged to fill out the job-specific questions for as many or as few positions as desired.
  • Any applicant applying to a Managing or Desk editorship MUST print out and submit the APPLICATION SUPPLEMENT to the mailbox of Basil Apostolo.  
  • Contributors need not apply to become contributors.  This application is for Managing, Desk, Layout, and Photo Editors.  Any Gilman student may contribute to the paper.
  • After you submit this application, we will be in touch via email to schedule an interview.

The editorial staff of the news is composed of Senior Staff (Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editors), Editors, a Layout Editor, and a Photo Editor. Please fill out the appropriate questions below depending on which job(s) you are applying. Remember, if you are applying for a managing or desk editorship, you must print and complete the application supplement by the application deadline.
for managing editor
Managing editors are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the paper, as well as managerial duties such as finding overdue writers, sending underclassmen attendance, and maintaining control in the publications lab while upholding the open and uncensored environment we all value.

For a desk editorship
Desk editors each have a team of writers for whom they are responsible. they refine ideas brainstormed during meetings. They are responsible for working with their writers to be sure that the article matches the assignment. They must also communicate with senior staff when an articles is (or expected to be) late.

For layout editor
The Layout Editor is responsible for the paper once articles are finalized and we shift from writing to laying out. He works with the Editor-in-Chief to create a rough plan of article placement, and is then responsible for coordinating layout sessions with others competent (and learning) InDesign. He also must keep track of and input copy edits made on hard copy drafts into InDesign. The Layout Editor also manages the website and uploads new issues and coordinates online exclusives.

For photo editor
The Photo Editor is responsible for all photographs used on the website and the print edition. Writers are responsible for scheduling relevant photographs for their articles with the Photo Editor, and the Photo Editor is responsible for ensuring said photos are available by the time the paper goes to layout. He also must coordinate placement with the Layout Editor, and is responsible for black-and-whiting and editing all photos for the paper. He ensures we have functional head shots of all writers.
