What is the first thing you will do as student body president?

In order to take Gilman to the next level, when elected Student Body President, I will first start by following through on something I have been planning for quite some time.

I will bring back a highly successful Student Government project from a few years ago that changed the Student Government as we know it. By dedicating the majority of his summer to his solid business idea (image below from room CT-214), a former Gilman Student Body President was able to make $80,000 for Gilman’s student government. With that added $80k bonus, he was able to pull off spectacular events during his time (like skydivers at pep rallies and celebrity guests at dances). With more money to work with, I will pull off better pep rallies, dances, proms, as well as new events/activities.

I have spoken with the Student Body President who made this business, and I am looking forward to devoting my summer to re-creating a similar operation, so that next year, the Class of 2020’s senior year, will be truly unforgettable.

Gilman alumnus John Chirikjian (Gilman ‘13, Yale ‘17) dedicated his summer in order to make $80,000 his senior year, taking Gilman’s student body to another level.

What do you love most about Gilman?

There is no one singular thing that I love about Gilman, because I love so much about this school. But if I had to narrow it down, I would say the energy of the school (when at its peak) and the amazing and talented individuals that walk the halls every day. From Gilman Volleyball to Ice Hockey to the Spring Musical, I am always impressed by the accomplishments of my peers. You know a Student Body President has done his job well when the energy and spirit of the school ties perfectly together with the student body’s work, and I’m looking forward to delivering that electric atmosphere next year for the entire student body.

Mission: Impossible is the movie that best describes my life and me as a Student Body President. In the movie, the protagonist Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has to work tirelessly in order to survive and get the job done. Often times, the task he must complete is impossible. However, Hunt always gets the job done. He does this by hard work, creative thinking, and taking suggestions from his team. That’s what I will do next year. By involving the Student Body, using creative and innovative ideas, and working endlessly to get the job done, I will make next year the best that Gilman has ever seen.

Have a question for Ibbe? Ask it below!

“My mission is to make next year far better than what you see in this Student Government highlight video from the past ten years.”

Why should the student body vote for you?

I can promise that no other candidate has the vision, experience, and plans to make next year absolutely amazing as I do. I want this year to be the most successful year in Gilman history, and I will not settle for anything less. I want to build on traditions of the past, but also take Gilman in a new direction, and do things that have never been done before at Gilman. Also, unlike the other candidates but similarly to Quinn Beagle, I don’t play any sports, so I will be able to be there and lead us throughout the entire year as Quinn Beagle has done this year. Playing even one sport as President dramatically decreases the success of the year and even their position on that team.

In order to show you my vision for next year, I made this video to show some Student Government highlights of the past ten years. But what you’ll see in the video is only the beginning. Next year, I plan to take Gilman to the next level by implementing new ideas from not just me, but the entire student body. Seeing my vision come to life is important to me as a candidate, but it will be even more important to me as a President, and I hope that you see just how important it is to me (and how hard I’m willing to work for it) through this page and throughout the election.

What makes you different from the other candidates?

I am the only candidate that has presented researched, tested, and innovative ideas for making next year the best it can be. Some candidates have stood on stage presenting outrageous promises that will never come true, while others provide no ideas for next year because they know they will not put in the work to follow-through. I, however, have a very clear vision for next year, one that I will work tirelessly to see to fruition.
