8th Annual Film Festival

By: Max Sternlicht

On Friday, May 11th at 7:00pm, Gilman will host the 8th annual Daniel A. Citron Film Festival. The festival welcomes submissions from K-12 students in Maryland. Daniel Citron (‘12) founded the festival in his junior year after being inspired by several festivals he had submitted to around the country. He also started Gilman’s film and displays clubs. Participants can enter a variety of film categories including: Narrative, Documentary, Animation, Foreign Film, Music Video, Elementary & Middle School, Cinematography/Drone, and Technology (the latter two categories being new or modified from previous years).

This year the festival will have several sponsors, including Happy Robotz and the president of Chosen Media, Inc, Calvin C. Watkins Jr. The faculty advisors for the festival are Ms. Jodi Pluznik and Mr. Cesare Ciccanti, who have both advised the festival for years. Ms. Pluznik encourages students to come experience the festival, saying, “The actual festival is a really fun evening, and one of the best deals in town for movie watching! Attendees will certainly be entertained.” When asked why a student should come to the festival, Mr. Ciccanti states, “The Gilman students will definitely enjoy seeing the other students’ work and it's a great way to spend an evening with your friends.” Wade Perry (‘19), the student festival director, added, “Like a coffee house it is a great way to spend a Friday night. There were a lot of great, funny, creative films last year.” Andrew Flynn (‘21) attended last year’s festival and commented, “The film festival is a really good way to watch other films made by other people interested in film.”

The festival will be held in the Alumni Auditorium, where concessions will be available before the festival. This year's submission deadline is May 1st at 11:59pm. Videos must be submitted in the form of a link (Vimeo, YouTube, Google Drive, etc.) with a quality of 720p or higher, while being under fifteen minutes long. The festival’s official website is http://gilmanfilm.com. Email gilmanfilm@gmail.com for more information about the festival.
