Gilman alumnus Gavin Sheets (’14), son of Gilman’s own Varsity Baseball Head Coach Larry Sheets, was drafted in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox. In 2017, Gavin’s junior year at Wake Forest, he was ranked 8th in home runs out of all NCAA players with 21 in just 63 games. He started his professional career with the Arizona White Sox, Chicago’s rookie league team, but was quickly called up to the Kannapolis Intimidators. In 2018, he spent the entire season with the Winston-Salem Dash, Chicago’s A+ affiliate, where he posted a respectable .293 batting average along with 28 doubles. This year, Gavin started out with the Birmingham Barons, where he earned the role of starting first baseman. When reflecting back on his first few years in the minor leagues,  Gavin said, “Getting to play professional baseball has been a dream come true. While I have not reached my end goal yet, I am continuing to rise level by level in the White Sox organization. Playing everyday for 6 months has its ups and downs, but at the end of the day, it comes down to having fun with it and remembering it’s still a game. ” We wish Gavin the best of luck in this year’s season and hope to see him in the big leagues soon!
